What is a Legal Entity Indentifier Number?
The LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a standard that has been adopted to increase transparency of transactions between organisations that cross regional jurisdictions. An ISO 17442 standard “Financial Services – Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)” which consists of a 20 digit alpha numerical code unique to each legal entity that falls under the updated Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) and accompanying Regulation (MiFIR).
How do I know if I require an LEI?
The LEI is not just for organisations trading internationally or on the stock markets, banks or financial intermediaries. Government bodies, may also obtain an LEI if conducting official business, and any other company wishing to obtain one, even if not legally required. Check out our about page for more information. However an LEI number is legally required for entities who are listed on an exchange, issue or trade equity/debt, and the subsidiary companies of the aforementioned entities.
What information do I need to supply to receive my LEI?
The information required to receive an LEI will be easily a member of your organisation, especially somebody in the head office. You will need to know the following information:
- Do you already have an LEI number?
- Official name of the Legal Entity
- Legal Entity address
- Legal jurisdiction
- Company registration number
- VAT number
How much does an LEI cost?
The initial cost for obtaining an LEI is €165. This includes annual registration management and maintenance.
Once I have received my LEI, how can I find an official Global listing?
We will provide your supplied email address with a guide explaining how to best navigate the Global LEI index, and search for LEI numbers.
Can I change from which Local Operating Unit my LEI is registered?
If an issuer already has an LEI code from an LOU, it can avail of the option to transfer (port) that LEI code from another LOU by clicking here.
How will I know when to renew my LEI number?
We will send you a reminder 1 month out from you renewal date, we can automatically process the transaction using your previous records.
Do I need to obtain an LEI number from an issuing organisation (LOU) within my own country?
No. In the interest of fair play, GLEIF (check validity of this statement) have stated that you can obtain an LEI number from any Local Operating Unit in the world. You may also obtain an LEI from an LEI issuer located abroad if your country does not have an LEI issuer. To see a list of all LEI issuers / LOU's click here.
